WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over countries annually. Even though WED celebration have been held annually sincein the idea for rotating the center of these activities through selecting different host countries began. The host nation was Canada.
And each year there is a new host; a city which is the centre point for all the celebrations. This observance also provides an opportunity to sign or ratify international environmental conventions. Thousands of activities were organized worldwide, with beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and much more.
Every year people from all over the world take part in a huge number of different events to draw attention to the main issue. World Environment Day is held each year on June 5.

The day has made it possible for UNEP to combine efforts with nations, organizations, and even individuals in the environment conservation.
